Athletes and Protein

Friday 5/7/2010

I found this article online by the Mercury News.  It is about what protein to take as an athlete.  As you may know, at the new store, we are carrying almost 10 different types of protein.  So what are the differences?  We have organic, raw and super greens type of protein.  These are the best forms of natural protein.  But then we have soy, egg, casein, pea and whey protein.  So why are these important?

As an athlete you want to know what protein is good for you after a workout.  Also you want to know what works for recovery and for energy?  Should you be taking Soy, Whey or Casein?  Well definitely not casein after a workout since casein is a timed release protein.  You want to replenish the muscle as much as possible post workout.  Whey is by far the best while soy is close right behind.  Check out the article below to see how athletes tested with each type of protein.

Thursday 5/6/2010

I was doing my daily research and ran across this article.  I have to admit, the best training comes from being trained.  The best athletes in the world have trainers.  When I am competing, I have a head trainer.  Why?  You always need someone there to critique form and for motivation.  Trainers can watch and learn your weaknesses. They can help you be better.  Check out this article below on this study.

Paleo Kits

Wednesday 5/5/2010 Well first off, Happy Cinco de Mayo. As most of you know, I follow a very strict diet. It is the paleolithic diet which dates back to the paleolithic era, 10-12,000 years ago. After following this diet for over a year and a half, I could not be happier with my health. It has truly changed my life. I have also noticed several people beginning to follow the paleo diet as it makes its impact on society. When I heard that their was a packaged food called paleo kits, I could not resist but to get 50+ kits into the new store. Paleo kits are designed to be block and zone friendly which means carbohydrates, fats and proteins are proportionate. Furthermore, the beef jerky is grass fed, and the nuts are all dry as well as the fruit. These kits are a perfect snack. Come try one, they almost fill you up like they were a meal. Come check them out.

As we get closer to summer time, the questions becomes "are you ready"?  Summer creeps up on you in a simple blink of the eye.  You wake up one day and it is raining and the next day, it is 75 and sunny, especially in California.  A lot of people don't know that when January 1st rolls around, you have about 8 weeks before spring break.  Being in summer time shape starts around Christmas time.  It is never too late to start your diet or transform your body.  If you want help, come down to Health e Centric powered by Athlete's Fuel at 212 N. Life Lesson

Wednesday 4/28/2010

My grandfather has been sent home from the hospital this week to finish his life with us.  He became really sick over the past few weeks and there isn't really anything we can do for him at this point.

He leaned over to my father this past week and said, "Only if I had taken better care of myself"!  Wow, what a statement.  This is why I am so cautious about my body and always active.  At a young age, even at the age of 50, you are considered young in medical terms.  We think we are invisible to health related problems.  The bottom line is IT STARTS AT Adolescence!.  Taking care of your body now will result in longer and healthier living.

There isn't much to say but that if you want to be naive and avoid living a healthy lifestyle then you will eventually pay for it in the long run.  It starts today, ARE YOU READY?

Childhood Obesity

Tuesday 4/27/2010

As many of you know, we have moved the store to 212 N. Santa Cruz Ave.  You ay also see Health e Centric as the name.  Do not worry, the actual name is Health e Centric powered by Athlete's Fuel.  But at Health e Centric we will be focused on wholesome living.  We will address anti-aging, skin care, children supplements etc.

We will also have guests speakers on various health concerns.  Most notably, childhood obesity.  I have childhood obesity that runs in my family and I learned at a young age to take care of myself through nutrition.  However, not all children are this lucky.  Please read the article attached below on childhood obesity.

Monday 4/26/2008

I ran in the Great Race this past weekend.  My goal was a sub 30 minute time for 4 miles.  I ended the race in 31:38 :(  I believe I would of done it in sub 30 minutes but the start of the race was so clustered.  I believe with everyone starting at the same time, (with over 1,300 participants),  I actually was walking the first 2 minutes trying to get around other people.  Am I blaming others?  Absolutely not!  I need to continue to work.  The good news is that a long run 3 or 7 or even 13 miles is no problem.  My long term endurance is great but my short output is deadly.  I need to keep a constant pace in the 400 meter or 800 meter.  I will continue to practice these during the remainder of my training season.  But my main reason for this post is to preach, PRACTICE WHAT YOU SUCK AT!

If you can't run short distances, swim long distances, jump rope for 5 minutes straight, then practice it.  Specializing in one thing is not always the best option.
