My thoughts

Wednesday 5/19/2010

When it comes to running, I always here people running 3 miles straight or even 1 mile straight.  Did you know it is just as effective, or more effective to run the same distance in interval sprints?  For example, if you were going to run 1 mile, we would have you do 4 X 400meter sprints with 2 minutes rest in between or 8 X 200 meter sprints with 1 minute rest in between.  Why?   Fibers will build to increase speed as well as endurance for the same distance.  Furthermore, you will get a rest which will let your heart rate settle.  Most people would assume that this is a bad thing.  But letting your heart rate settle a little will actually increase your fat burning, by increasing your heart rate when you start on your next interval set.  Your heart rate is a direct relationship to how much fat you will burn.  If you are looking to burn fat, increase speed, increase endurance, or all of the above, try interval sets.  I know psychologically it is tough to get out of the mindset of running your 3 miles everyday.  But if you give this a try, I promise it will only help.

Right Way To Warm Up

Tuesday 5/18/2010

What is the right way to warm up?  If you have trained with me over the past 6 months you would have noticed that I spend more time stretching then working out.  Why?  Warming up and stretching have been known to increase strength and burn fat.  It is actually more beneficial to have a good warm up and stretch then to actually go for the run or lift the weights that are associated with a typical fitness regiment.  This is why, Yoga is so popular.  Then again, you also get a great workout in as well.  Check out this article below on "the right way to warm up".

Squat!

Monday 5/17/2010

I was walking through the gym the other morning, and a sign said, "learn how to squat"?  I was with another woman and she laughed and said, everyone knows how to squat.  Sure everyone knows how to squat, but do they really know the correct form?  A squat is an everyday occurance.  When we sit down, we squat correctly.  But once you pull the chair out from under them, their form goes to sh*t.  A squat should be focused on your hips and driving your knees out in the pocket.  A squat is the most functional movement in all of fitness.  Check out this link below for the correct form of a squat.

Weekend of 5/15-16/2010

A customer the other day questioned me on a subject.  I said egg white protein was low in cholesterol.  And he responded, "no, don't you mean high in cholesterol?  Eggs are high in cholesterol".  Well yes they are, but that is the yolk.  All the cholesterol and fat are found in the egg yolk.  So with egg white protein, the benefits are low cholesterol and high protein.  The egg white of a whole egg are high in protein and low in cholesterol.

My rule of thumb is 1 egg yolk for every 4 eggs.  The other 3 would be egg whites.  This is a good fat to protein ratio.  Also for men over 40 who need to watch their cholesterol, they tend to find the least amount of cholesterol and the most amount of protein in egg white protein.

If this sounds good to you, come check out our Jay Robb Egg White Protein.  We have samples for you to try so you are not stuck with a flavor you don't like.

Moxxor

Friday 5/14/2010

Moxxor is our featured product at the store.  Did you know that it is the most potent Omega 3 in the world?  It is 158 times more powerful then regular fish oil and 250 times more potent then Salmon oil.  Moxxor is distributed by Health e Centric.  You cannot buy it from online unless you buy it from a distributor first.

You need 1 gram of fish oil for every 10 pounds of body weight.  At one point in my life, I was taking 30 fish oil pills a day.  Talk about having a fishy smell.  The other benefit to Moxxor is it is moleculary distilled so you do not have the after taste associated with regular fish oil products.  Please go to www.Moxxor.com to find more information.  If you like what you see, come in and try a bottle today and just wait to see how you feel.

Heart Rate Watches

Thursday 5/13/2010

Why are heart rate monitors beneficial?  I know anyone can go into the gym and jump on the treadmill and it will calculate the calories they burn.  Is it accurate?  Not exactly.  Why?  It is like a BMI chart (Body Mass Index).  BMI charts always tell me I am obese when in actuality my bodyweight ranks in the top percentage for my age class.  So when a treadmill says you burnt 500 calories, don't be deceived.  Those monitors are a great tool to give you a baseline but everybody's body works differently.  The only way you can actually accurately know what you are burning is by checking your heart rate through standard measurements like checking your pulse beats per minute.

So why are heart rate monitor watches accurate?  They will actually measure your pulse rate which will let you know what you are burning.  A treadmill is not attached to your wrist or chest, so it can only give you a baseline or projection.  If you really want to know what your burning, come check out our Polar watches.

Couplets

Wednesday 5/12/2010

I always try to come up with some sort of couplet during my interval training.  What is a couplet?  Well it is exactly what it sounds like.  It is 2 different movements performed one after the other.  But my goal is usually to do a couplet involving strain on a muscle.  This means back squats and box jumps.  Kettlebell swings and pull ups.  Why are these couplets hard?  The lactic acid build up and fatigue are excruciating.  A kettlebell swing to a pull up is grip sensitive while a back squat to a box jump feels like you have lead in your shoes.  I believe couplets are the hardest way to perform workouts.  If you don't believe me, try one next time you workout.  Maybe do bench press and push ups.  Oh and if you want to be really hard, don't rest between rounds.

Tuesday 5/11/2010

San Francisco was just ranked the number 1 leanest city in America according to a study released last week by Men's Health.  San Jose was very close with a top 20 ranking.  Why do you think we ranked so high?  I think the fact that we have so much sun year round that being beach shape is always a must.  I know certain times in the year like February when you expect it to rain, I have gone to the beach because its 70 degrees.  Besides that I always take care of myself because I am a health freak, I am also cautious that it is beach season.  Also I think people are more into raw and organic products in the west coast.  I know that I have converted to this way of life over the past 18 months.  Hint: This is why the new store is more focused on health as a whole (i.e. raw food and vitamins), then just supplements.

Your Own Worst Enemy!

Monday 5/10/2010

A lot of times people stop doing a movement because they let their mind play games on them.  They listen to the thoughts of, "I cannot do another rep".  Did you know that a burpee or up-down and an air squat is always possible?  You can always do a burpee!  All you have to do is fall to the ground and stand back up.  If you stop it is because your mnd got the best of you.  Do not be your own worst enemy.  Certain movements are out of your control.  Another deadlift or another bench press can go to failure.  But most body weight movements can be done continuously.  So next time you are doing one of the movements above, don't let you mind be your own worst enemy.

Overtraining

Weekend of 5/8-9/2010

Do you know your body will tell you when or if your overtraining?  If you feel tired, sluggish, tight, or plateauing during workouts, this might be a sign that you are over training.  A lot of people would listen to their psychological mindset of continue to train even when they are tired but all that this will do is set you back.  Most people believe even if they burn some calories they will burn fat.  But in actuality, over training and burning those extra calories isn't the answer always.  Your body can actually store more fat by over training.  This is because the body will be under so much work that it will not think it will get a rest.  So what does it do?  It stores food for energy.  In some cases it will store more then you eventually burn, and you will start retaining fat.   So be cautious of overtraining.  Listen to your body and you will see results.
